Tokyo Workshop on International Development (TWID)

Objectives of TWID:

Recent development studies have achieved a remarkable progress following the lead of evidence-based empirical research, in particular the development of rigorous policy evaluation methods and experimental economics using randomized-control trials.  At the same time, as the total amount of Japanese ODA declines, the need to systematize the lessons learnt from Japanese development assistance and to share them to outside world as international public goods is the highest ever.  Given these backgrounds, this workshop is launched by four faculty members in the Graduate School of Frontier Sciences, the Graduate School of Economics, and the Department of Civil Engineering of the University of Tokyo, who study the economic and social issues of developing countries. 

The workshop is held for 2.5 hours once a month under various themes of international development (e.g., effectiveness of development aid programs, transfer of technology or institution to developing countries), inviting researchers and students within and outside of the University of Tokyo, both domestically and internationally.  The scope of the workshop is not confined to development economics, but it also aims to contribute to creating new ideas by expanding the communication opportunities across disciplines, including natural sciences such as engineering, agriculture, network science, and geographic information system (GIS).

At each workshop, two research presentations will be given followed by discussions among the participants.  The ultimate goal for our workshop is to improve the research capacity of participants, thereby contributing to pushing forward the frontier of development studies in Japan.  Another aim is to contribute to expanding the domestic and international network of researchers in this field.

TWID設立趣旨：

近年の開発研究は、エビデンスに基づいた緻密な実証研究、特に無作為化比較試験（RCT）の考え方に基づいた厳密な政策評価や実験経済学などの流れを受けて目覚ましい発展を遂げている。他方、ODA予算削減の元で質の向上を求められている日本の援助においても、その知見を体系化し、国際公共財として発信すべく、質の高い研究を行う機運が高まっている。

これらの背景を受け、本研究会は、東京大学新領域創成科学研究科、経済学研究科、工学研究科において開発途上国における経済発展・社会発展について研究している4名が幹事となって立ち上げたものである。研究会は、東京大学学内および国内・国外の研究者・学生の参加を広く募って、国際開発に関する諸問題（例えば開発援助の効果的な実施、途上国への技術や制度の移転など）をテーマとして、毎月1回2時間半程度開催される。特に、本研究会では幹事に工学系の研究者を加え、開発経済学者に限定することなく、工学、農学、空間情報学等の理系分野の研究者の参加をも促すことで、異分野の交流を広げて新しいアイデアの創出に貢献していきたいと考えている。

各回2名による研究発表を行い、参加者の間で研究内容について議論を深めることで、参加者の研究能力を向上させ、日本の開発研究全体のレベルアップに貢献することが、本研究会の最大の目的である。また、研究会での交流を通じて、研究者の国内でのネットワーク、国外とのネットワークを広げることも目的の一つである。
