Russo-Japanese Conference "History of the Russian Peasantry in the 20th Century" took place on November 26, 2011, from 13:30 till 18:00 at Kojima Hall in CIRJE. 3 scholars from Russia (I. Koznova, V. Kondrashin, G. Dobronozhenko) and 3 from Japan gave a report to the Conference. About 20 scholars participated in it. All the reports, along with other 3 articles, will soon be published in Russian in the CIRJE research report series No. 9 (CIRJE-R-9), titled "20th Century and Rural Russia. Vol. 2".

On November 18, 2011, CIRJE hosted a joint international conference with Research Institute of Capital Formation (RICF), Development Bank of Japan and Institute of Statistical Research. We invited overseas researchers covering the fields of corporate finance and corporate governance. This conference provided an opportunity for the candid exchange of opinions concerning the issues of firms such as the role of financial institutions and capital markets, and the allocations of control rights, through reports of the latest academic research results. Overseas participants are Pramuan Bunkanwanicha (ESCP Europe, France), Emir Hrnjic (National University of Singapore) , Sung Wook Joh (Seoul National University, Korea) , Vikas Mehrotra (University of Alberta, Canada) , Raghavendra Rau (University of Cambridge, UK) , Lloyd Steier (University of Alberta, Canada) , Steen Thomsen (Copenhagen Business School, Denmark) , Akiko Watanabe (University of Alberta, Canada) , Masahiro Watanabe (University of Alberta, Canada) , Yupana Wiwattanakantang (National University of Singapore).

The Eighth Joint conference of Seoul National University and University of Tokyo, Current Topics of Economic Policy

The Joint Conference with The Institute of Economic Research, Seoul National University (SNU) was held at the Kojima Conference Room in the University of Tokyo on November 11, 2011. CIRJE has had annual conference series with Institute of Economic Research in SNU and this was the eighth conference. The theme of the 2011 conference was "Current Topics of Economic Policy ". Having experienced a series of economic crisis, the establishment of a new economic system is now one of the urgent tasks in Japan and Korea. We had fruitful discussions on several policy issues, including medical economics and employment problems in the world economy. We had five distinguished guest speakers from SNU: Chulhee Lee, Byung-Yeon Kim, Biung-Ghi Ju, and Sokbae Lee. From CIRJE, Toshiaki Iizuka and Masayosi Hayashi participated as speakers and Hiroshi Ohashi and Seung-Gyu Andrew Sim joined as discussants. Shin-ichi Fukuda chaired a session. At the end of the conference, we confirmed further collaborations between CIRJE and Institute of Economic Research in SNU.

Symposium organized by the Japan Federation of Housing Organizations and CIRJE, "Housing indutry and finance in an aging society"

On September 14, 2011, the Faculty of Economics at the University of Tokyo hosted an open conference on 'Housing Industry and Housing Finance in an Aging Society' with Japan Federation of Housing Organizations. After the opening speech by Professor Yoshikawa, Professor Fukuda addressed the keynote speech on housing finance in Japan. Then, four panelists, Professor Sonoda (Meiji University), Mr. Yano (Japan Federation of Housing Organizations), Professor Fukuda and Professor Ihori discussed various policy issues on housing industry and housing finance in Japan under the chair of Professor Kunitomo.
