The 23rd TRIO conference of this academic year took place on 16th and 17th of December 2010 at Kojima Conference Room, Economics Research Annex (Kojima Hall), University of Tokyo. This is a joint conference series sponsored by Center for Economic Policy Research (CEPR), National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), and Tokyo Center for Economic Research (TCER). Center for International Research on the Japanese Economy (CIRJE) as well as Center for Advanced Research in Finance (CARF) supported the conference this year. The theme of the conference was "Fiscal Policy and Crisis." The topic is one of today's most important issues in Europe, the US, and Japan. While each region faces a different economic environment, it commonly faces serious accumulated fiscal deficits. To analyze the causes and the consequences of these fiscal deficits is an urgent policy issue in each region. From the University of Tokyo, Shin-ichi Fukuda presented a paper, and Takatoshi Ito and Yasushi Iwamoto served as a discussant. From abroad, Eric M. Leeper (Indiana University), Michael Devereux (University of British Columbia), David Cook (Hong Kong University of Science and Technology), Bruce Preston (Columbia University), Takeo Hoshi (University of California, San Diego) participated in the conference. We had intensive and fruitful discussions on the important policy issues.

The Joint Conference with Seoul National University (SNU) was held at Seminar Room 16-655, Department of Economics, Seoul National University on October 29 (Friday), 2010. This was the seventh annual conference series between CIRJE and Institute of Economic Research in SNU. The theme of the conference was "Issues on Economic Development and Industrial Organization". After welcome speech by Youngsub Chun (Director, Institute of Economic Research, SNU), we had wonderful speakers and fruitful discussions on the related issues. Tetsuji Okazaki, Shin-ichi Fukuda, Yasuyuki Sawada, Toshihiro Matsumura, and Takashi Kano attended the conference as either a speaker or a discussant from University of Tokyo. From SNU, Bonggeun Kim and Sung-Jin Cho presented their interesting papers, while Byung-Yeon Kim and Chul-In Lee served as a discussant. Having experienced a series of economic crisis, the establishment of the architecture of a new economic system in East Asia is now one of the urgent tasks. We had hot discussions on how to design a desirable economic system in East Asia and the world economy. At the end of the conference, we confirmed further collaborations between CIRJE and Institute of Economic Research in SNU.

"Three-Country Conference" is annual conference series jointly organized by Faculty of Economics, University of Tokyo, College of Business Administration, Seoul National University, and Guanghua School of Management, Peking University. In the conference series, we discuss various topics on financial markets in East Asia. The Center for International Research on the Japanese Economy (CIRJE), jointly with the Center for Advanced Research in Finance (CARF), supports this conference series. The 2010 Three-Country Conference was held on August 20th (Friday), 2010 at Kojima Hall, the University of Tokyo. The theme was "The Global Financial Crisis and Asian Financial Markets". We had two participants from China, three from Korea as well as many participants from our department and other research institutes in Japan. After welcome speech by Professor Kazuo Ueda, four excellent papers were presented at the conference. We had very fruitful discussions on the impacts of the global financial crisis on Asian financial markets and current and future of the Asian financial markets. After confirming further research collaboration among the three universities, we closed the conference successfully.

2010 APEA Conference

The purpose of the APEA conference is to encourage economic research on international economics in the Asia-Pacific region through promoting interactions among economists in the region and in other parts of the world. The conference follows a series of conferences organized by a group of economists in the United States, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Mainland China on the Asian economies. The 2010 Asian APEA Conference was held at Hong Kong Baptist University, Hong Kong, on July 8-9, 2010. The CIRJE organized two keynote speeches at the conference. One is Professor Masao Ogaki's (Keio University) speech titled "Time Discounting and Intergenerational Altruism". The other is Professor Kazuo Ueda's (University of Tokyo) speech titled "Japan's Bubble, America's Bubble, and China's Bubble". We had intensive and fruitful discussions on the related topics after the speeches. At the end of the conference, we confirmed the need for more forums for economists to share their research work with others, to interact with other economists, to search for more research opportunities and topics, and to make policy recommendations.
