The Joint Conference with Seoul National University (SNU) was held at the Kojima Conference Room in the University of Tokyo on November 13, 2009. CIRJE has had annual conference series with Institute of Economic Research in SNU and this was the sixth conference. The theme of the conference was "Issues of Economic Policy: Theory and Evidence". We had five distinguished guest speakers from SNU: Professor Yoon-Jae Whang, Professor Keunkwan Ryu, Professor Dong-Hyun Ahn, Professor Young Sik Kim, and Professor Youngsub Chun. Experienced a series of economic crisis, the establishment of the architecture of a new economic system in East Asia is now one of the urgent tasks. We had fruitful discussions on how to design a desirable economic system in East Asia.

The Center for International Research on the Japanese Economy (CIRJE) hosted a joint symposium "Perspectives on Asian Economy after the Global Financial Crisis" with Daiwa Securities Group Inc. The symposium was held at Yasuda Auditorium in University of Tokyo on October 26th, 2009. Japan Center for Economic Research supported the symposium. The symposium had two keynote speakers, Scott Rozelle (Stanford University) and Motoshige Ito (University of Tokyo), followed by panel discussions. The panelists were Kazuo Ueda (University of Tokyo), Toshiro Muto (Daiwa Institute of Research), and Masahiro Kawai (Asian Development Bank Institute). Since the collapse of Lehman Brothers, the financial crisis has been extraordinary in its persistence and global reach. Given the economic uncertainty surrounding the recovery of global markets, the symposium presented a timely look at Asia's contributions to global economic stability and global welfare.

Spatial Economics Workshop in Tokyo

Spatial Economics Workshop in Tokyo was taken place at University of Tokyo on September 19, 2009. Four state-of-the-art papers on spatial economics are presented and active discussions were held among twenty participants of the Workshop. Robert Helsley (U. C. Berkeley) reported a unified theory of urban sprawl and downtown blight, Yves Zenou (Stockholm) presented a labor market model with car ownership of different ethnic groups. Shin-Kun Peng (Academia Sinica) showed where multinational firms establish plants by a theoretical model, and Michael Pfluger (Passau) reported a tax subsidy model of new economic geography. A variety of knowledge and new ideas were exchanged through active discussions among participants.
