| 報告 | Mitsuru Igami (伊神 満) (Yale University, Yale Department of Economics) "Welfare Gains from LCD Innovations, 2001–2011" with Shoki Kusaka, Jeff Qiu, Tuyetanh L. Tran |
| Abstract | We assess the welfare impact of new technologies by using detailed data from theglobal industry of liquid crystal display (LCD) panels. We focus on measuring bothproductivity growth via process innovation and consumer benefits from new products.We find process innovation accounted for most of the welfare gains in the computersegment, whereas product innovation played a major role in the TV segment. Wefurther decompose process innovation into vintage capital and learning by doing, andproduct innovation into larger products and other new varieties. We then conduct aseries of benefit-cost analyses to quantify the social and private returns on technologicalinvestments. Results suggest social returns were large, but most firms’ private returnswere small or negative; competitive pressure forced them to invest nevertheless. |

| 報告 | Enrico Pennings (Erasmus School of Economics, Erasmus University of Rotterdam) "Incumbent Capacity Responses to Entry: Evidence of Predation in the U.S. Airline Industry?" [Paper] |
| Abstract | We empirically examine the post-entry price and capacity response of incumbent monopolists in 256 incumbent-entrant fights with a winner in the U.S. airline industry and find evidence of behaviour that is consistent with predation. The novelty of this paper is to use incumbent capacity to identify predatory behaviour, which helps overcome the hurdles of standard predation tests comparing price to cost. We exploit the fact that it is unprofitable to increase available capacity after entry since quantities are strategic substitutes for competitors. We show that incumbents who increase capacity after entry are more likely to eliminate competition, restore their monopoly position and exploit market power by raising prices after the exit of their rival. |

| 報告 | Meradee Tangvatcharapong (Hitotsubashi University) "The Impact of Vaccine Misinformation: Evidence from the US" [Paper] |
| Abstract | The increasing amount of misinformation, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic, has generated significant debate about the proper role of government and media platforms in combating it. However, little is known about whether and to what extent misinformation can actually change health behavior. This paper addresses this question by examining how parents responded to the unexpected surge in media coverage in 2007 of the verifiably false claim that the MMR vaccine caused autism. Specifically, I use a difference-in-differences approach to compare the vaccination rates of children whose parents were most and least likely to be affected by the news over time. Results indicate that susceptible parents were 3.3 percentage points less likely to vaccinate their children with an MMR shot by the recommended age of 15 months and 4.1 percentage points less likely to do so by 29 months. |

| 報告 | Dr Jane Zhang (Durham University Business School) "Performance Contests and Merit Pay with Empathic Employees" |
| Abstract | This paper studies the behavioral responses of employees who are endowed with empathic abilities to different institutional designs of incentive pay. Empathic abilities motivate altruistic behavior by sensing the other’s feelings towards oneself. In performance contests, empathic individuals withhold effort, most (less) strongly when facing a non-empathic (empathic) contestant. Effort levels of both non-empathic and empathic individuals increase with a higher probability that the contestant is of their own type. By developing a theritical model, our analysis contributes to understanding observed individual behavior in experiments and corresponding econometric evidence. With direct merit pay, effort choices only depend on the signaling quality of the performance measure. Individuals with stronger empathic abilities may shy away from performance contests to, instead, receive merit pay. If gender governs empathic abilities, setting incentives by performance contests cannot simultaneously ensure equal pay and equal opportunities. |

| Abstract | This paper study how managers coordinate specialization within the firm. We show that (1)The pyramidal structure arises endogenously. (2) Managers hire, coordinate and supervise subordinates. (3) In additional to occupational specific skills, there is also a demand for horizontal, upward and downward communcation skills for different levels of employees. (4) Earnings of employees rise with the level of the hierarchy in which these workers occupy. |

| Abstract | The division of household labor and changes in time allocation upon retirement have been longstanding topics in labor economics. The effect of retirement on the spouses' division of housework has also received considerable attention. However, less is known about how this division develops in the years following the retirement decision, especially in countries with traditionally rigid gender roles such as Japan. Newly developed analytical methods also allow us to revisit these traditional topics from new perspectives. Using data from a long-running Japanese household survey, I examine the impact of a husband's transition to retirement on housework and the share of the burden. |
