Abstract:
We explore if cooperation among buyers can actually benefit the seller in auction-like environments. In particular, we modify the standard independent private values setting by assuming that a sale confers a positive externality to all bidders. Corporate takeover battles, repeated auctions and other vertical contracting problems yield such a model as a reduced form. The seller is allowed to choose from admissible mechanisms---a mechanism is admissible if the expected payment of a bidder who never wins the good is zero. We show that the revenue maximizing admissible selling procedure of the seller must involve joint bids provided the externalities are not insignificant. In fact the seller does better by making a take-it-or leave it offer to a consortium of bidders than run an auction.
