Microeconomics Workshops

Nov. 17, 2006

Dear graduate research students,

It is worrisome that few of you regularly attend research forums including our weekly workshops and lunch seminars.

You are urged to remember that these research seminars constitute an integral part of our graduate school education. For prospective researchers such as yourselves, nothing can be more educational than active participation in these research presentations. Missing these invaluable opportunities means you are wasting your time, tuition, and prospective career.

Please also be reminded that weekly workshops are official credit courses wherein the criteria for course credits include "regular attendance and active participation." As it stands now, none of you will qualify for these credits (at least in Microworkshop).

We are now forced to contemplate introducing roll-calling at the beginning of each workshop presentation so as to record student attendance, although this would defeat the ground principle of voluntary yet active participation, which is one of the founding pillars in our academic research community.

Obviously, if you are feeling turned off by these research seminars, we are extremely keen to hear why, so that we can better accommodate your needs and interests. (Should you have any constructive suggestions please inform dsasaki@iss.u-tokyo.ac.jp -- thanks!)

We sincerely hope that you return to where you should be.

May we thank you for your attention, and look forward to seeing you soon in one of these forums.
