| Abstract | 1. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the influence of a third country on the location of foreign direct investment (FDI). We focus on two determinants of FDI location. One is the number of firms located in the third country. The other is the magnitude of demand for the good that the investing firm produces. We construct a three-country model, where two of the three countries are potential host countries. One country of the potential host countries has a geographic advantage in exports to the third country. Using this framework, we show that when the number of firms in the third country is sufficiently large, the farther (more distant) country always becomes the host country of the plant. In addition, we show the effect of tax competition between the potential host countries on location of FDI. Tax competition can make the range over which the nearer country can attract the investing firm wider. Finally, we reveal that when two potential host countries form a union that imposes harmonization of tax rate, the aggregate welfare of the union under the harmonized tax is higher than that under tax competition. However, it is possible to emerge a conflict between the two countries when a policy change from tax competition to the harmonized tax is introduced. |

| Abstract | 1. We analyze the impact of urban population growth on individual utility in a general equilibrium model of monopolistic competition with product diversity, pro-competitive effect and income heterogeneity between workers. When urban population grows, utility level increases through the mass and price of product varieties and land rent earned, while it decreases through effective labor supply at the Central Business District and land rent paid. Each impacts on worker’s utility through five factors is investigated separately. Finally, it is shown that, as urban population grows, while the workers with lower income always gain, the workers with higher income may lose in the case for larger urban population. |
