"Were Baby Girls More Likely To Be Killed For Birth Control In Pre-Modern East Asia?" [PDF]

[要旨]
Since the 1990s a group of demographers has claimed that infanticide was widely committed in premodern China as a preventive check. These revisionists suggest that strong boy preference and economic considerations made parents intensively kill female babies in infanticide. We explored validity of this sex-biased hypothesis of infanticide by studying demography of Colonial Korea (1910- 1 1945) that satisfies most conditions implied by the revisionists. Our result refutes the hypothesis; the sex ratio of both surviving and murdered babies were not significantly different from the natural sex ratio. We infer that data problems inherent in genealogies or registration records led the revisionists to a wrong conclusion. If they use better data, they will, we expect, confirm our result.

Japanese scholars, beginning with Akira Hayami, have spoken of an "industrious revolution" in early modern and modern Japan.  Scholars of European economic history, most especially Jan de Vries, have discussed a different kind of "industrious revolution."  Historians of China have pondered both the European and Japanese kinds of industrious revolutions.  How can a focus on "industrious revolutions" suggest similarities and differences in the patterns of economic development typical of the extreme ends of Eurasia?   Such comparisons promote an understanding of how early modern and modern eras of economic change can be connected in different world regions, thereby contributing to our understanding of global economic history.

(Abstract) This paper explores the connections that link consumer behavior to the  household economy and the household economy to the markets, both factor markets and product markets.  First, the distinctive characteristics of modern consumer behavior are specified and placed in their historical context. Consumer behavior is constrained by several factors that present major coordination problems. Most of these coordination problems must be resolved in the context of the household.  Consequently, the organization of the household is a major factor in shaping consumer behavior. Likewise, the strategies available to the household depend in large part on the extent of the market(s) available to it.  This paper discusses the tension between individual and group (household) preferences, and the tension between the household economy and the market economy.  While the paper is based on the historical experience of northwestern Europe, it proposes extensions to Japanese historical experience.

 "The money market in Tokugawa Japan's Smithian growth"

    
 

    
 (Abstract) Elsewhere I argued that traditional Japan's household economy was compatible with the existence and development of the markets for land and labour, and hence that they played a role in Smithian growth in the Tokugawa and Meiji periods (Saito, 'Land, labour and market forces', Continuity and Change, vol.24, 2009). This paper, a development from Saito and Settsu, 'Money, credit and Smithian growth in Tokugawa Japan' (http://hdl.handle.net/10086/13705), is concerned with markets for money and credit.
