Abstract (Japanese) Abstract (English)

It is said that the new work relationship is arising in the online gig economy. The emergence of this work relationship might be a precursor to the disruption of traditional employment system. In order to examine the sustainability of this new work relationship, I begin by considering the phase of current transformation of employment system. On the basis of this consideration, this paper provides the preliminary analysis of “independent workers” who occupy the middle ground between employees and independent contractors. The category of “independent workers” is proposed by Harris&Krueger (2015). “Independent workers”, customers and intermediaries constitute the new triangular relationship where the internet platform plays a key role. I discuss differences between “independent workers”, employees and independent contractors from various viewpoints. And I take up the case of Uber which has grown at an exponential rate in the United States and other countries in recent years. Lastly, I give a short description of my research agenda.
