Tokyo Workshop on Spacial Economy

The main objective of Tokyo Workshop on Spatial Economics is to explore if space matters in real economy. Five researchers present the latest research developments in spatial economics on urban and regional economies and trade. In particular, the topics include (a) social interactions and segregation in the context of urban spatial structure and (b) special economic impacts of global warming, labor market integration, and city size. We thoroughly discuss on these topics from variety of perspectives. We also extensively argue policy implications of special economics such as optimal taxation in globalized cities.

On March 15 and 16, 2013, CIRJE hosted two international conferences "China and the World Economy" and "The Global Economy" at Kojima Conference Room, Economics Research Annex (Kojima Hall), University of Tokyo. The conferences were part of the project supported by JSPS Core-to-Core Program (B. Asia-Africa Science Platforms) in Japan. We invited several overseas researchers covering the fields of monetary economics, urban economics, international finance, international trade, labor economics, macroeconomics, and development economics. The conference provided an opportunity for extensive exchange of opinions concerning the issues of recent Chinese and world economies. The discussed topics included agglomeration in China, exchange rates in China and the world economy, monetary aspects in the global economy, macroeconomic aspects of emerging countries, and recent Asian economies. After reports of the latest academic research results, we had fruitful discussions on the related issues. Overseas participants are as follows: Kar-yiu Wong (University of Washington), Chung Mo Koo (Kangwon National University, Korea), Robert Dekle (University of Southern California), Kornkarun Cheewatrakoolpong (Chulalongkorn University, Thailand), Diego Cominy (Harvard University), Hyun-Hoon Lee (Kangwon National University, Korea).

Joint Economics Symposium of Yonsei University and University of Tokyo : Topics on Public Policy and Economics

The Joint Conference with Yonsei University was held at Kojima Conference Room, Economics Research Annex (Kojima Hall), University of Tokyo on December 14, 2012. The theme of the conference was "Topics on Public Policy and Economics". We had four distinguished speakers and discussants from Yonsei University: Jinook Jeong, KiYoung, Jaeok Park, and Doowon Lee. From CIRJE, Michio Suzuki, Tomohiro Hirano, Seung-Gyu Andrew Sim, Jun-Hyung Ko, and Shin-ichi Fukuda participated as a speaker or a chairman.

The Ninth Joint conference of Seoul National University and University of Tokyo, Current Topics of Economic Policy

The Joint Conference with Seoul National University (SNU) was held at Seminar Room 16-301, Department of Economics, Seoul National University on November 16 (Friday), 2012. This was the ninth annual conference series between CIRJE and Institute of Economic Research in SNU. The theme of the conference was "Recent Development in Economics", especially issues related with macroeconomics and labor markets. After welcome speech by Younghoon Rhee (Director, Institute of Economic Research, SNU) and Shin-ichi Fukuda (Former Director, CIRJE), we had wonderful speakers and fruitful discussions on the related issues. Kosuke Aoki, Michio Suzuki, Junichi Fujimoto, and Seung-Gyu(Andrew) Sim attended the conference as either a speaker or a discussant from University of Tokyo. From SNU, Tack Yun (Chairman of Department of Economics, SNU) and Byung-Yeon Kim presented their interesting papers, while Young Sik Kim and Sokbae Lee served as a discussant. Having experienced a series of economic crisis, the establishment of the architecture of a new economic system in East Asia is now one of the urgent tasks. We had hot discussions on how to design a desirable economic system in East Asia and the world economy. At the end of the conference, we confirmed further collaborations between CIRJE and Institute of Economic Research in SNU.
